Keep the actors. Change the world.

A new background, a set that runs past its edge, a different century, another sky — behind the performance you shot.

Plate: four actors in eighteenth-century costume roll barrels off a hand cart on a modern harbour quay, with container cranes, yachts and a van behind them. As shot
Period version: the same actors and cart on a cobbled eighteenth-century quay with tall wooden sailing ships and stone warehouses. Period
Weather version: the same period harbour in heavy snowfall. Snowfall

What it does

AI environment, handed back as layers.

Environment work changes the world around the performance: a background you couldn’t shoot, a set that stops at three metres, a present-day harbour that has to play 1760, an overcast sky that should be a storm. The actors and everything they touch stay as shot; the world behind them changes.

The jobs

  • Background replacement
  • Set extension
  • Period conversion
  • Sky replacement
  • Weather

What you mark

Describe the world or bring a reference plate: “a 1760s harbour, wooden ships, stone warehouses”. Mark anything that must stay, like the cart the actors are loading.

Shots it’s for

Where environment earns its keep.

  1. 01

    Background replacement

Blue and green screen, windows, car plates, skies.

  2. 02

    Set extension

The rest of the street, the castle above the gate, the city beyond the steps.

  3. 03

    Period conversion

Cranes, cars, cables and street furniture out; the period in.

  4. 04

    Sky and weather

Replace the sky, add snow, rain or fog to the world around the actors.

Questions

About environment.

Can you replace a background without a green screen?

Yes. nolanlabs pulls a matte of the actors from the plate itself and puts the new world behind them. A clean edge on fine hair against a busy background is still the hardest case, and you get the matte to refine it.

Are the actors re-rendered?

No. The people and what they touch keep their original pixels; only the world behind them is new. When weather has to land on the actors, we tell you before the run that they will change.
